Consolidating Power From Within
One of the most effective tools in the authoritarian playbook isn't loud or obvious, it's methodical. It works by dismantling the systems designed to keep any one person or party from accumulating unchecked power. It politicizes independent institutions, demands loyalty over competence, and uses fear to keep people too divided and overwhelmed to push back.
This is consolidating power from within. And it's happening right now.
This is often done to intentionally instill fear to promote autocratic rule by:
Exaggerating threats: Highlighting dangers like crime or terrorism to keep people in a state of constant alarm.
Creating "us vs. them": Dividing the public and demonizing certain groups to create distrust.
Controlling the narrative: Spreading misinformation to justify expanding power and cracking down on dissent.
Demanding Loyalty: Seeking centralized power over the executive branch and demanding unquestioning loyalty from federal employees.
Using the DOJ: The Department of Justice being used as a "personal law firm" to target, investigate, and prosecute opponents and protect allies.
Dismantling Agencies: Dismantling federal agencies and withdrawing from international agreements, weakening the very systems designed to provide checks and balances.
Neutering the Legislative Branch: Forcing legislators to exhibit loyalty by threatening retribution against those who fail to support the agenda.
Undermining elections: Making unsubstantiated claims about the integrity of elections.
Attacking the independence of judges. Refusing to follow court orders and inciting attacks on judges.
Labeling the press as "enemies of the people." Labeling any publications, broadcasts or other media that doesn’t echo their claims as “Fake News.”
These actions don't happen in isolation.
They're connected, and they're cumulative. Each one alone might look like a policy disagreement. Together, they form a pattern and that pattern has a name: FEAR BY DESIGN™.
Fearmongering isn't random. It's an intentional tactic to consolidate power by keeping people afraid, angry, and divided. The first step in resisting it is simply recognizing it for what it is.
